Prisons, Pipeline fail to match North African might again

Kenya Pipeline and Kenya Prisons will renew their rivalry in the battle for a bronze finish at the CAVB Women African Club Championship after they were outdone by North African opposition.

The two, who share 12 continental titles between them, crashed out in the semis to ensure Kenya’s sour wait for similar success will enter its fifth year as Egyptian hosts Al Ahly and Carthage of Tunisia reached the final.

Record winners Al Ahly knocked out Pipeline 3-1 on Tuesday, hours after their compatriots Prisons had exited at the hands of defending champions Carthage, losing by a similar margin.

It will be the third successive year a Kenya team is settling for third place at the competition with Prisons claiming bronze last year and Pipeline the previous year.

National champions Pipeline had started the tie on a high note, winning the first set 25-22 before Al Ahly clawed back in the second set to 25-16 and make it 1-1.

In the third set, the two coaches maintained their strong line-ups and the hosts went ahead to win the set by 25-19 to make it 2-1 leaving the David Lunga’ho led side with an uphill task to level the score.

Lung’aho opted to make changes in the fourth set surprisingly taking out experienced Esther Wangechi and Trizah Atuka bringing in Monica Biana and Naomi Too but the changes were ineffective  as they lost 8-25 as the hosts sealed the 3-1 win.
