Prisons skin Lesothos Red Skins in CAVB opener

Kenya Prisons got off to flying start in the CAVB African Men Club Championship trouncing Red Skins of Lesotho by straight sets ( 3-0 )as the competition served off on Tuesday in Al Ahly Club Hall, Cairo, Egypt.

The 2011 silver medalists saw off the Lesotho side 25-15, 25-14 and 25-22 to top Pool A on three points.

In the first and second set, the Paul Muthinja coached side proved to be too strong against their opponents who put up a spirited run in the third set, with the hope of making a comeback, once leading on 17-15 points but Prisons’ tactical discipline and shrewdness carried the day.

Seasoned wanderers trio Elphas Makuto, Sila Kipruto and Rodgers Kipkirui ensured their experience counted, ensuring that the tie didn’t head for a fourth set.

Prisons will on Wednesday evening face Espoir of Congo at 6 pm in their second preliminary tie.

In the second Pool A fixture, defending champions and record holders Al -Ahly will face Mwangaza from Congo as they eye to start their quest to retain their title on a high note.

Another Kenyan side General Service Unit (GSU) will take on Algeria’s Olympique in their first pool D tie at 8 pm (Kenyan time) on Tuesday before facing Wollaita of Ethiopia on Wednesday at 12pm.

The ten-day event which has attracted a record  24 teams will end on April 5, with Kenyan teams eyeing their first-ever gold medal in the championship.
