Prisons sparkle, GSU misfire as CAVB Championship serves off in Cairo

Kenya Prisons got off to flying start in the men CAVB African Club Championship trouncing Wolaita of Ethiopia while General Service Unit went down against Asaria of Libya as the annual competition served off Monday in Al Ahly Club Hall, Cairo, Egypt.

Prisons, the 2011 silver medalists eased past the Ethiopians in straight sets of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-23 in a Pool ‘C’ opener which also has Swehly of Libya, Rukinzo from Burundi, Espoire of DRC Congo and Cameroonians FAP.

National champions GSU were stunned by sparkling Asaria who made a remarkable turn-around to thrash the former by 3-2 sets in a Pool ‘D’ contest with the match going to the full distance of five sets.

The Libyans came from 2-1 sets down to win 23-25, 25-20, 17-25, 27-25 and 15-10.

Prisons will be up against Swelhly of Libya Tuesday from 7pm while GSU face Nemo Stars of Uganda from 6pm.

In a post-match reflection, Prisons head coach David Lung’aho praised his charges for the win while also shifting focus to the next match on Tuesday where they face Libya’s national champions Swelhly from 7pm.

“My boys followed my instructions to the latter and that’s why we have won but now the biggest challenge is against Swelhly tomorrow (Tuesday). I am very happy for the win and my squad is upbeat and this year we want to go past quarter finals,” said Lung’aho.

GSU will on the other hand attempt to get their campaign on track when they take on Nemo Stars of Uganda  having lost their opening match to Asaria  of Libya on Monday. The group also consists of University of Zimbabwe, AS Fag of Guinea and Mwangaza of DRC Congo.

The annual competition which has attracted 22 teams across the continent will serve out on April 11.
