Prisons target men and women national volleyball titles

As the weekend National Volleyball Play-off Finals in Mombasa countdown continues the men and women teams of Kenya Prisons are targeting to return home with the titles in their luggage.

The Prisons outfits will be out on a three day battle of the domestic league titans that begins on Friday at the Kenya Ports Authority Makande Hall.

Speaking to Citizen Digital at the Kasarani International Stadium on their final training on the eve of their departure for Mombasa, the men’s team coach David Chenge is optimistic that they will reclaim the glory from titleholders General Service Unit (GSU).

“The season has been okay both in the league and tournaments I would say its 60 percent because we have won four out if eight events held in Kenya.

“The league form was also good since we won 10 out of 12 matches, losing twice against the GSU and Nairobi Water and managed to get to the play-off as number three.

“We have prepared well enough for the playoffs. For the last three weeks we have been working on our reception, blocking and defense and I can say the boys are ready,” Chenge underscored.

Prisons women team head coach David Lung’aho is aiming for a strong start against former national champions Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) in their opener.

Lung’aho who also coaches the senior national side Malkia Strikers, is desperately seeking the coveted trophy having seen the title slip from him for two years in a row.

“We have planned to take to take the cup and there is nothing that is going to prevent me from taking it. Last year I did not have four of my players and that’s why I could not land the title.

“The girls have only lost one match against Pipeline in the finals and according to me they have played very well,” the confident Prisons women boss told Citizen Digital.

“I know all teams plan to go there with the title in mind but the best players will take the trophy home and I believe its mine,” he added.

Prisons men kick-off their play-off charge against GSU before playing Nairobi Water and Pipeline with the ladies taking on Nairobi Water and Pipeline after their clash with the Bankers.
