Promising Zakayo highlights 2019 targets, aims at improved performance

The 2018 Safaricom Sports Personality of the Year most promising athlete Edward Zakayo believes he will build on the successes he realized last year to post even better performances in the new calendar year.

The 17-year-old begun the year on a good note bagging  bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, before winning gold at the World U-20 championship in Tampere, Finland and the African title in Asaba Nigeria.

And as he prepares to compete in the senior ranks, Zakayo in optimistic of a good show.

“I know this will be different. Last year I competed as a junior and I’m very ready for the new challenge,”he said in a reflection with Citizen Digital after his Soya fete in Mombasa on Friday night.

“My main target is to represent Kenya in the 2019 World Cross Country Championship in Aarhus Denmark,”he added.

For Zakayo, competing at this stage and representing his beloved motherland is a dream come true.

“I am looking forward to doing well in the Diamond League, it’s a new thing for me because I have never taken part in it.

“I believe in myself because I’m  still young and I have the speed and endurance, I’m  going to hit the ground running.”

To win the SOYA Most Promising Athlete title, Zakoyo beat World U-20 10,000 metres champion Rhonex Kipruto as Judoka Carlos Ochieng took the second runners-up position.
