Punching above its weight, Homeboyz now sets eyes on league title

After finishing third in the 2017 Kenyan Premier League, Kakamega Homeboyz is now aiming to improve its performance next term, with a league title on their sight.

“We only need to be focused on what we are doing and with the divine help we can even challenge for the domestic league title.

“I’m glad the boys have mastered my philosophy and implemented it. Next year we could smile even more,” the former Chemelil Sugar tactician said.

Homeboyz who were promoted back to the KPL in 2015 after their demotion at the end of the 2013 season have steadily improved their performances over the years.

In 2015, they finished eighth and went a step better in 2016, claiming a fifth spot, before leaping to the third position in the ended season.

“When you look at our performance in the last three seasons, it clearly shows you that the club is improving every year and we can’t expect to drop,” Mururi, an ex- international enthused.

Mururi has also attributed the club’s ever- improving performance to unequivocal support from club chairman Cleophas ‘Toto’ Shimanyula and the hard work and dedication of his players.

Mururi was among the three nominees for the 2017 SJAK Coach of Year Award which he lost to Sofapaka’s Sam Ssimbwa, who led his side to a second finish in the league, behind champions Gor Mahia.

Homeboyz have however had a muted performance in the transfer window but the soft spoken Mururi is hopeful he will bring on board a few new players.

“I have not been in the market yet but have already identified some talents, those who have just finished high school and some from other clubs,” he said.

And if past performances are to be used as a yardstick and with the coming on board of the County Governement of Kakamega as their sponsors, other title contenders should take notice of the young team from western which is punching above its weight.
