Queens to strengthen squad for inaugural Womens Champions League

As part of bolstering their squad ahead of the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions’ League tournament, Kenyan Women Premier League (KWPL) champions Vihiga Queens are on verge of signing three new players.

In an announcement made by the Football Kenya Federation though a letter to the club, the competition is scheduled  to take place from July 17 to August 1, 2021 with 11 clubs from the East African countries taking part. Kenya will host the tourney.

This will be the first ever Caf Champions League zonal qualifier which will be a build up to the Women’s Champions League to be staged in Morocco later this year.

In an interview with Citizen Digital, Vihiga Queens head coach Alex Aumira welcomed the opportunity saying it will help in promoting ‘our talents’ to the entire Africa continent.

“We are so much excited for being given a chance to feature in the league and it’s my prayer that my players will capitalize on that so as to earn chances of playing in different clubs across Africa,” said Alumira, adding that, “My squad is in a good shape but considering that we are going to meet tough clubs from the East Africa region we will have to bolster our squad. I am looking forward to signing three players –  a goalkeeper, a midfielder and a striker.

I have already identified them but we are waiting for the deals to materialize so that we can announce to the media.”

The club has now kicked off the virtual training programme where players are being sent training instructions online.

The Confederation of African Football had earlier unveiled the official plan and qualification format for the first ever women’s champions league.

Each of the Caf zones including Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa), Council of South African Football Association (Cosafa), Union of Football Federations of Central Africa (UNIFFAC), West African Football Union (Wafu) and Union of North African Football Association (UNAF) will organize qualifiers that will produce the six top teams.

Afterwards, two other teams will be added –  the host  nation and another from the combined Caf zones tournaments’ best loser, to make it eight .The final eight teams will then be divided into two groups of four teams each for a face off for the Champions League title.

The competition lays within Caf’s four-year women’s football strategic plan, which was launched in collaboration with Fifa last November in Egypt.
