Quins down Homeboyz to keep unbeaten start rolling

Kenya Cup log leaders Kenya Harlequins maintained their superb start of the season after beating hard fighting Menengai Cream Homeboyz 31-24 on Saturday at the RFUEA Grounds Nairobi.

Quins started the contest on a high note and scored their first try through their captain Tony Mutai before Kevin Keegan added the extras with a brilliant conversion

The hosts looked more focused as Jared Owinyo added the second five-pointer with Keegan making no mistake with his boot for 14-0 in the 21st.

Homeboyz roared back to the contest when Philip Ikambili went over for their first try that was converted by Edwin Wafula.

Quins pulled further ahead through the boots of Eden Agero and Issa Andimu to stretch their advantage to 26-12 at the break.

After half time, Quins made three changes by bringing on Willy Ambaka, Frank Wanyama and Ugandan international Ronald Musajja.

The latter made a clever build up that led Agunda score his second try for 31-19 score.

Homeboyz player Cyprian Kuto limped out with a minor injury giving Michael Wanjala a chance to make his debut but their misery continued as Patrice Agunda grounded Quins’ fourth try although the conversion went wide.

The Deejaz made yet another sub as Edwin Wafula came off for Humphrey Owuor in the 70th and the change had the desired effect when Tony Anyango went over for their second try but the conversion was missed.

Onyango notched his brace later on for the visitors to set up a nervy finish but Quins held on for victory by the margin of 31-24.

Elsewhere KCB Lions mauled Top Fry Nakuru 33-3 at the Den in Ruaraka in the battle of the former champions.

The Lions raced to a 15-0 at half time with a try, two penalties and a convertion with Oliver Mongeni putting the hosts ahead with a penalty before Peter Kariu going over for the five-pointer.

Henry Ayah scored a penalty for Nakuru at the start of the second period but KCB completed the rout with three more tries from Collins Wanjala, Darwin Mukidza and Nick Ongeri. Mukidza added another penalty for the final score.

Champions Kabras Sugar edged Mwamba 20-11, Nondies secured a first victory of the season when they beat Blak Blad 29-11 while Impala Saracens grounded Strathmore Leos 24-12.
