Quit soon? Not me, Im here to stay, says Wanja

Long-serving national women’s volleyball team setter Janet Wanja has downplayed reports that she will retire after the upcoming Kenya Volleyball Federation play-offs set for November 30 to December 2 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

The volleyball queen, arguably the most seasoned player in Malkia Strikers camp alongside  fellow setter Jane Wacu, says she has the energy and a lot to offer, and is not ready to bring down the curtain after a decorated career spanning 18-years.

The 34-year-old, who started her international career during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece added that she will be around for quite some time and for now is aiming at helping her team, Kenya Pipeline in their quest to defend the KVF title.

“It’s like people want to force me to retire because I read it that I want to retire after World Championship in Japan and now here again they say I will not be around  next year, but to clear the air, I will not retire soon,”she charged.

She went on: “People ask why I cannot quit for other young players but I tell them, if the coaches select me then it means I am good and trust me I won’t retire because people want me to.”

The Mukumu Girls alumni who has won five Africa Nations Championships, three All African Games and World Grand Prix title in 2015, a first for an Africa team, and six appearances at the World Championships with Malkia Strikers says there are many clubs in Kenya and abroad which are chasing for her signature but is adamant she will remain with Pipeline.

“There are many clubs who want to sign me; an indication that I have a lot to offer but I want to remain with Kenya Pipeline and help them clinch the KVF play-offs title,” she offered.

During the three-day play-offs which also serves as the qualification for next year’s Africa Club Championship, Wanja’s Kenya Pipeline will square it out with arch-rivals Kenya Prisons, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Bungoma County team .

In men’s category, champions and this year’s Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Cup winners, General Service Unit (GSU), will face off with Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Kenya Prisons and Mombasa Prisons.
