Rains temporarily halts KICOSCA Games, Nakuru win Basketball title

Heavy rains disrupted the Kenya Inter-Counties Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games which entered day four on Thursday at the Kericho High School grounds in Kericho County, forcing volleyball finals to be pushed to Friday.

Volleyball women defending champions Uasin Gishu were leading by two to one sets against Nairobi before the afternoon downpour halted the action.

According to the organizers, the final is scheduled to be played afresh on Friday morning between the two sides who also clashed in last year’s finals held in Kisii with Uasin Gishu standing high against the Nairobians.

Uasin Gishu captain Rhodah Jepkoech speaking after the disruptions brimmed with confidence they will spike their nemesis and retain their gong in three successive years.

“Tomorrow (Friday) we will defend our title and I am confident about that although our opponents have come of age and you can even see they have defeated us in one set,” she told.

Despite the disruptions the morning clashes however went on as planned, Uasin Gishu County men volleyball team blew  Muranga County team 3-0 in the semi-finals tie to set-up a repeat of 2017 and 2018 finals against Kiambu who dismissed Nakuru by 3-1 sets in the other last four tie.

Muranga lost the first set by an inch tumbling to a 27-25 defeat before Governor Jackson Mandago’s boys handed them an identical 25-15 defeat in the second and third sets.

Uasin Gishu captain Benard Koros is keen to retain the volleyball crown three years running claiming that it has to go back to their cabinet.

“I know it will be a tough one but all we will work hard and go for it, it is the second successive year we are playing Kiambu in the finals and we are ready to tame them,”  he averred.

In basketball, Nakuru thumped Bungoma 49-42 in the finals to rip-off the title from the former champions Kiambu.

In their en route to the finals, the new champions edged Kiambu 41-31 in the semi-finals while Bungoma survived a slim win of 27-25 against Uasin Gishu County in the second semi-final.

Kericho dominated the handball category claiming the crown both in women’s and men’s category even though the competition has no reward yet.

Kericho ladies handball team thumped Siaya 20-12 in the first final while their male counterparts crushed Siaya 24-20 in the final.

However, Siaya men’s team skipper Isaiah Asila called on the KICOSCA organizing committee to put a price tag on the handball competition.

“It will be nice if the organizing committee put a crown for this game so that when we compete we know we are competing for something,” said Asila.

Meru banned

Meanwhile, Meru football team received a blow after the KICOSCA organizing committee banned the team over fielding ineligible players on Tuesday.

The team fielded young guns who are not part of the county staff in group stage match against Nairobi County crushing Sunguti’s charges 5-1, which was refuted by the KICOSCA football committee withdrawing the win to Nairobi.

Football competition is yet to have a new champ after Defending champs Machakos missed in this year’s action after receiving a similar ban last year for fielding unentitled players.

Uasin Gishu football team stormed into the semi-finals after thumping their foils Nandi County 1-0 in a match played at Kericho Technical Training Collage.
