Reality check as KPA , Equity fail to shine at Fiba Championship

Kenyan representatives at the Fiba Championship Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Equity Bank posted  sluggish performances in the just concluded Africa Women Championship in Maputo, Mozambique finishing seventh and ninth respectively.

KPA who had hoped to improve on last year’s performance where they finished fifth failed to show their mettle while Equity also failed to live up to the huge expectations.

The Dockers who had finished third in their Group B matches hammered MB2ALL of Madagascar 52-49 in a seventh place finish battle on Sunday.

Both teams had failed to get a chance of playing in fifth and sixth place face-off after they were defeated 55-69 and 65-75 respectively with KPA losing to Forces Armees Police (FAP) of Cameroon while MB2ALL had lost to Insitut Nationale Securite Sociale of DRC Congo.

Earlier, KPA had lost 40-73 to home team Ferroviario in quarter final stage.

On their part, Equity Bank smashed Lakers of Zimbabwe 65-54 to finish in ninth place.

“We have learnt a lot. We aspire to do better in the coming year. I’m sure each one of us has learnt something that will help us in our upcoming games in the semis and hopefully in the final games,” KPA captain Brend Angeshi said.

The two clubs represented the Africa Zone Five in the tourney after finishing first and second respectively in the Zone five Championships that were held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in October.

The dockers and the bankers will be playing their domestic women league semi finals playoffs once they jet back; with the former facing a tough test against Storms.

Equity, on the other hand, will battle Strathmore University.

Meanwhile, home team Ferroviario de Maputo utilized their home advantage claiming  their first-ever FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup title after beating five-time Winners InterClube 59-56 in Sunday’s final.

Nigerian champions First Bank finished third after dismantling Victoria Club from DR Congo 93-69 in the third-place game, as Forces Armees Police (FAP) of Cameroon finished fifth after smashing Institut Nationale Social Securite (I.N.S.S) of DRC Congo 60-45.
