Rhino Charge 2015 Raises Ksh108 Million for Conservation

The 2015 edition of Rhino Charge raised a record Ksh 108,617,802 beating last year’s collection of Ksh 102 million.

The annual event, held over the weekend at Kalepo in Namunyak Conservancy, is aimed at collecting funds to go towards Rhino Ark’s projects on Mt Kenya and Mau Eburu to preserve the conservancies.

Work on the two projects is underway with 80 km of the Mt Kenya electric fence already built and the 43 km perimeter fence around Mau Eburu completed.

The top three fundraisers for this year were Alan McKittrick’s Car 5 team raising a total of Ksh 7,595,979, Peter Kinyua’s Car 23 team which raised Ksh 5,620,000 and Mark Tilbury’s Car 35 team that raised Ksh 4,546,925.

Out of the total amount collected, around Ksh 1.2 million was given to the host community in form of salaries.

Alan McKittrick’s team remains the highest fundraiser having raised Ksh 7,236,768 last year.

The team has recorded a total Ksh 116,073,282 since joining the competition in 1989.

Rhino Charge stands as a prime fundraising event for the construction of the Aberdare Electric Fence to protect wildlife.

Based on its success, the project has since been extended to Mt Kenya and Mau Eburu as well as supporting host communities.

Working in partnership with Kenya Wildlife Service and Kenya Forest Service, Rhino Ark works on the maintenance and strengthening the management of the 400 km electric fence and its gates around the Aberdare ecosystem.
