Rio Scandal: DCI hands over confiscated Team Kenya kit to NOC-K

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) on Thursday handed over kit belonging to Team Kenya which was confiscated from officials involved in the Rio scandal to the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K).

NOC-K President Paul Tergat accompanied by the acting Secretary General Francis Mutuku and Executive Member Shoaib Mohammed were presented with the kit Thursday morning at the DCI headquarters by the Director of Investigations Bureau John Kariuki.

Accompanying them from DCI were Michael Sang, Mike Muuia and investigating officer Sgt. Joseph Oweng.

NOC-K said in a statement that the process of kit distribution has now been documented to ensure the right people receive the kit at the appropriate time and with the appropriate kit.

“There are also plans of automating the store to ensure a more seamless system. We are in talks with partners who can work with us on this. This is in line with the Executive’s commitment to put athletes at the center of its governance.

“We recognize that the national kit is one of the most important aspects of representing Kenya,  it gives athletes a proud and patriotic feel, and we will protect this at all costs by ensuring that Team Kenya is always well kitted for any Games.”

NOC-K said it will now go ahead to plan for the distribution of the acquired kit to benefit the many young and upcoming athletes.

Some of it will go towards the athletes who are in the qualification pathway for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

“We have about 15 disciplines in which athletes are still trying to qualify for the postponed Games. Most of the qualification events have not been set, but we will be ready to give these athletes the support that they require.”
