Wiyeta stun St. Johns to top group, Nyakach held

Wiyeta Girls beat St. John’s Kaloleni 2-0 to finish top of Group B with maximum points on Thursday at the Kisumu Boys Secondary grounds as the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Airtel Rising Stars nationals entered their third say.

Maureen Katach scored the opener for the Nzoia Region’s champions in the second minute before Bela Anyango doubled the lead in the 15th.

In another match played at the same time at Moi Stadium Kisumu, Nginda from Aberdare shared spoils with Nyakach in 2-2 draw. Nginda topped Group A with seven points.

Nyakach took the lead in the fourth minute through Cynthia Akinyi, before Christine Kitaru equalised in the 13th. She notched her brace in the 40th but the lead was wiped out in the 60th when Triza Manyala hit back from the spot.

Wiyeta will play Group A runners up Nyakatch who finished the preliminaries with five points in the second semi final on Friday. The first semi will see St. John’s, who finished second in Group B with six lock horns with Nginda.

Kirigara Girls of Highlands and Sindo exited the tournament without a point. The former lost 4-1 to Metropolitan’s Olympic while the later slipped 1-0 to Itigo in a dead rubber match.

This was Itigo’s only win in the tournament.
