RMS sports host Kimani caps year with national award

The 2016 winner of the Best Sports Show at the Kenya Radio Awards, Jeremiah Kimani, has labeled the award ‘a great honour’ while revealing God and passion have been the wheels of his career years behind the mic.

Kimani – a sports host at Royal Media Services (RMS)-owned Inooro FM – adds Wednesday was the culmination of 13 years of hard work when he trounced a stellar cast of nominees for the top award at the Kenya National Theater.

“When Kwanduka show was announced the best of all I couldn’t believe it. It took me a while to get off my seat and by the time I was contemplating walking onto the stage nearly a dozen fans were already up my space and cheering. It was really great to see them support me all the way after voting in large numbers. I thank the organizers for coming up with the idea of having a Radio Awards. It’s a great gesture,” Kimani, alias Referee Mwenyewe told Citizen Digital.

Even for his outstanding accomplishments as a radio sports host, Kimani reveals his alternate career would have been the adrenaline-inducing rally driving or athletics both of which he still bears much admiration for.

He says meeting his favourite radio presenters in his college years drove him to the media industry.

“I have little regrets over the choice I made and when I received a call from a colleague of mine that my show had been nominated I felt thrilled. I was surprised when a fan of mine helped me design a social media campaign poster. It attracted immense support and ultimately helped me defeat heavyweights to be recognized as the best,” he added.

Also in contention was the Sports Arena show hosted by Hot 96’s John Kyanda and which made it to the top five.

“He deserves the award. he understands his audience and always strives to give them the best. He is a great friend of mine but i promise to give him a run for his money next year. Of course our target audiences are completely different so I can’t exactly say we’re straight up competing against each other,” Kyanda said of his colleague’s feat.
