Roaring Starlets put eight past hapless Wydad in Morocco

The national women’s team Harambee Starlets started their tour of Morocco in resounding fashion by hammering Wydad Casablanca 8-1 in their opening fixture on Saturday night at the Royal Moroccan Football Federation ground.

The team which travelled to Morocco on Thursday touched down at Casablanca before proceeding to the Capital City of Rabat for their two friendly matches.

Christine Nafula notched a treble in the rout that got underway in the seventh minute when forward Neddy Atieno opened the floodgates.

Nafula added a second in the 17th before Esse Mbeyu Akida made it 3-0 in the 21st. Nafula claimed her brace in the 27th and shortly after, skipper Mary Kinuthia tore through for 5-0 inside the opening 36 minutes.

Cheris Avilia continued the goal rush in the 50th before Nafula sealed her treble a minute later with Corazon Aquino claiming an eighth in the 76th.

“We still have a bit to work on but there is great improvement tactically. The build-up was great; we created chances and utilized them,” team manager Doreen Nabwire told Citizen Digital from Rabat.

She confirmed they will not face the Moroccan national side as earlier planned since most of their players are involved in ongoing military games in the kingdom.

“It is impossible for their federation to put together their team,” she added.

Wydad Casablanca who are commonly known as Wydad al Ouma are a Moroccan Sports club based in Casablanca best known for their male football side that has won African honours

In the Morocco ladies first tier league, WAC is currently in second.

Starlets will play CAK on Monday for their second clash as the countdown to their maiden Africa Women Nations Cup continues.
