Roaring Telkom shifts focus to club championship

With the league title seemingly wrapped up, Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Women Premier League side Telkom is now shifting their focus to the Africa Cup for Club Championships.

The defending champions were at the weekend awarded three points and five goals following the failure by the University of Nairobi (UoN) to turn up for their match on Sunday.

The varsity side failed to honour their league match as they were participating in the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) national games which are currently ongoing at the Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology.

But despite the free points, earned without breaking a sweat, Telkom coach Jos Openda was not a happy man, arguing that every match  is significant in their preparations  for the Africa Cup for Club championships which takes place in January.

“It was a big letdown, because we need to play all the games. We believe in playing and winning on the pitch and also considering that the club championship is around the corner so every match matters in our preparations,” Openda told Citizen Digital.

Nevertheless Openda is elated by their fantastic form as they remain unbeaten with three matches to go to the end of the season. They have only conceded three goals in the campaign.

“Our target was to win the league without conceding a goal but unfortunately we have already conceded three .Now that we are going for club championships, we will aim not to concede a single goal,” Openda charged.

Telkom, who are the continental defending champions, will be looking to defend the title as well as win the coveted trophy for a record tenth time.

Meanwhile, men defending champions Strathmore University Gladiators moved out of the relegation zone after registering two wins at the weekend. They beat Chase Sailors 2-1 on Saturday before edging out Nakuru 2-0 on Sunday to climb to position eight on the log with 30 points.

Meanwhile, Kenya College of Accountancy (KCAU) remained in relegation zone after losing 2-0 to Greensharks who in turn moved to the second spot leapfrogging Butali Warriors who were not in action at the weekend.

Run away leaders, Kenya Police, continued their fine form this season as they brushed aside Sikh Union Nairobi 4-2 to take their tally to 70 points thus opening up an 18-point gap at the summit of the top flight league with five matches now remaining for the law enforcers.
