Rudisha eyeing World Championship after shaking off injury

World 800m record holder David Rudisha has resumed training as he gears up for the 2019 IAAF World Championships after enduring a tough season plagued with injury.

The two-time Olympics Champion pulled out of the 2017 World Championship after suffering a quad-muscle strain and later this year he was diagnosed with an irritation around the sitting bone; a condition that causes hamstring trouble.

The 29-year-old has however put the injury concerns behind him as he has slowly returned to training as he aims to make a comeback at the 2019 World Championships to be held in Doha, Qatar in September.

“I have slowly resumed training after the injury I suffered last year and thereafter early this year. I have completely recovered and I am looking forward to next year,” the soft-spoken Rudisha told Citizen Digital.

The two-time World Champion’s glittering career has however been hampered by multiple injury scares having pulled out of the 2013 World Championships before doing so again in 2017.

Although the ‘King’ as he is fondly known is targeting a comeback once again, he says he may not compete in as many competitions as before owing to the recurring injury concerns.

“I will try to compete in a few races because as you know my body is not in the same shape I was a few years ago due to the unfortunate injuries that have been affecting me over the years,” added Rudisha.

Alongside the World Championships, Rudisha has set sights on the 2020 Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo, Japan where he will be aiming to make it a record three titles in a row.

“Right now my focus is on the World Championships which I intend to use in readiness for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” revealed Rudisha.

The celebrated middle distance-athlete who has developed a cult status among his fans currently holds the 800m world record at 1:40.91 he set at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
