Rudisha powers to world leading victory in Hungary

Olympics and world champion, David Rudisha, warmed up for his title defence at Rio 2016 Olympics by powering to the 1:43.35 world leading victory at the István Gyulai Memorial meeting in Budapest, Hungary on Monday night.

The world record holder who finished third at the Kenyan Olympics Trials in Eldoret eased away from compatriot Jonathan Kitilit (1:44:16) and Nicholas Koech Kiplangat (1:44.90) for his fourth victory of the season.

The 1:40.91 standard bearer who added the world title to his Olympics crown in Beijing last year had his world leading mark at the June 30 and July 1 Rio 2016 Trials in Eldoret when he won the semifinals rounded to 1:43.4 after the electronic timing equipment failed.

London 2012 Olympics bronze winner, Timothy Kitum (1:46.39) was seventh running only 48 hours after winning the KBC Night of Athletics race in 1:45.43 in Heusden, Belgium. He is not part of the men 800m line-up for Kenya at the Brazil Summer Games.

Commonwealth 2010 champion and Daegu 2011 World Championships men 1500m silver winner, Silas Kiplagat, who also missed out on Rio sealed a Kenyan top-five sweep in the Metric Mile in 3:36.70 to collect a morale boosting victory.

Vincent Kibet (3:36.83), Collins Cheboi (3:36.83), Mathew Kiptanui (3:38.29) and Hillary Kipkorir Maiyo (3:38.84) followed home in that order to round the first five across the line.

World Cross junior champion, who has had an injury plagued season showed signs of bouncing back to formidable shape when she took the honours in the women 5000m race in 15:02.83 ahead of compatriot Margaret Kipkemboi (15:03.17) and Ethiopia’s Goytatom Gebreselassie (15:04.24) who settled for the minor podium places.
