Rugby at last! Kenya Cup set for February return

There is hope in the horizon after Kenya Rugby Union chairman Gangla Oduor said the much awaited 2021 Kenya Cup campaign is likely to kick off next month.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Oduor says they’re working together with Kenya Cup clubs and the government through the ministries of sports and health to find a way on how the sport can make a return.

“The Union is closely working together with the clubs and the government so as to come out with a formula on how rugby will resume hopefully early next month,” said Gangla.

According to Gangla, other sports activities are back in action amidst the Coronavirus pandemic saying rugby should also make a return to the pitches.

“The good thing is that Covid 19 cases are going down in the country and I think everyone has accepted that we must try and live with Corona, said. “Students are back to school and people have resumed jobs so I think it’s just sports that we now need to get back.”

The sport hasn’t been played since March last year when the first case of Covid-19 was reported with the government subsequently banning sports activities.

However, over time, sports with minimal contact such as football have been given the nod to resume.

Oduor added that the government should prioritise the sportsmen saying after giving the vaccine to doctors and policemen they should also count on sportsmen.

“After the resumption we will play the championship playoffs where the semi finalists will be promoted to the Kenya Cup where they will replace Western Bulls and Kisumu RFC who were relegated from Kenya Cup, ” he explained
