Rugby sensation Ogeto Gecheo is dead

Nondescript centre and rugby sensation, Ogeto Gecheo, has passed on this morning at the Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi.

Gecheo – a younger brother to SuperSport East Africa General Manager, Auka Gecheo, sustained a spinal injury during Nondies’ Kenya Cup clash against Strathmore on Saturday.

The former Maseno School captain underwent a successful surgery over the weekend and had plates affixed on his vertebral column but the sad news broke out this morning, casting the Kenyan rugby scene into mourning.

On Saturday, he suffered what was at the time thought to be a mild back injury towards the close of the match at Madaraka where he was stretchered out.

In his post-match reaction, Nondies Team Manager, Kevin Were, assessed the youngster’s injury as a career threatening one but as he woke up to the unfortunate news, Were expressed his shock and stated he felt utterly distraught at the thought of losing such a promising talent.

In his brief yet passionate stint at the sport, Gecheo captained Maseno School in 2015, leading them to second place at the KSSSA National 15s final where they lost 13-12 to Laiser Hill.

Only 19, Gecheo made his Kenya Cup debut for the Nondies in a 17-5 loss to Homeboyz and had quickly established himself as a first choice outside centre in the side.
