Russias Mustafina wins women artistic gymnastic in European Games

Russia added to its gold medal tally at the inaugural European Games on Thursday, Day 6 of competition in Azerbaijan.

In the all-around individual women’s artistic gymnastics, Russia’s Aliya Mustafina top scored with 58.566. Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber was second on 56.699 and Lieke Wevers of Netherlands third with 55.065.

Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine won the men’s competition, finishing on 90.332, to local hero Oleg Stepko of Azerbaijan’s 89.065 and 87.365 for Russia’s Nikita Ignatyev.

The men’s 1m springboard diving gold went to Russia’s Nikita Shleikher, aged 17, with a total 543.80. His compatriot Ilia Molchanov was second on 512.20 and Great Britain’s James Heatly third with 483.40.

Another Briton, 15-year-old Lois Toulson, won the women’s 10m platform gold with 456.70. Russia’s Anna Chuinyshena came second on 429.15 and Elena Wassen of Germany was third with 410.40.

Four finals were held in freestyle wrestling and three of them were won by Russians.

Aleksandr Bogomoev beat Georgia’s Beka Lomtadze 3-1 PP in the 61kg class; Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov defeated Magomedmurad Gadzhiev of Poland 3-1 PP in the 70kg category; Abdulrashid Sadulaev got the better of Piotr Ianulov of Moldova 4-0 ST in the 86kg class; but in the 125kg category Turkey’s Taha Akgul came out on top, defeating Aleksei Shemarov of Belarus 3-0 PO.

Russia tops the medals table with 22 gold, 9 silver and 9 bronze. Host Azerbaijan has 12:5:12 and third-placed Hungary 7:1:5.
