Ruthless Uganda eliminate South Sudan from Cecafa

South Sudan became the first team to exit the ongoing Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup on Friday, after a 5-1 thumping by champions Uganda at the Bukhungu Stadium Kakamega.

Derrick Nsibambi scored twice as Milton Kalisa, Hood Kaweesa and Nico Wakiro Wadada netted one each shooting the Cranes top of Group B, albeit equal on points with Burundi (4) but with a superior goal difference.

Kalisa opened the scoring thrill in the 7th minute, before Kaweesa doubling the lead three minutes later.

The first of Nsibambi’s brace  came in the half hour mark, before completing it five minutes after into the second stanza.

It was Wadada who sealed the sweet victory for the Moses Basena-coached side, with only five minutes on the clock.

Al Ahly Shendy striker Luak Wol had pulled one back in the 25th, which would stand as the Bright Stars’ only consolation.

This was a repeat of their 2018 African Football Championship (Chan) qualifier in July, Kampala, when South Sudan soaked in a similar margin of goals from the record Cecafa winners.

The defeat left South Sudan winless after two outings, hence zero points. Ethiopia has three points is third in the group (B) with three points.

The ultimate group winner will be known after Uganda plays Ethiopia in Kakamega on Sunday, and Burundi taking on South Sudan who will be completing their tournament obligations.

Meanwhile, the competition enters day eight on Saturday with hosts Kenya taking on Group A leaders Zanzibar Heroes, at the Machakos Kenyatta Stadium.
