Safari Sevens returns as Kenya hopes to lift cup

Kenya seek to reclaim the Safari Sevens title when the 20th edition kicks off Saturday at the Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani

Kenya last won the title in 2013 when Shujaa beat Australia Renegades 40-7 in a one-sided final. Shujaa are in Pool ‘A’ and will open the proceedings against minnows Burundi at 1PM before another tricky tie against Italy at 3:50PM.

This will be followed by another clash against Western Province of South Africa in the evening (7PM) under floodlights.

Kenya’s second side Morans are in a tough Pool ‘C’ and face Zimbabwe (12PM), Samurai international (2:30PM) and Neighbors Uganda (5PM).

Kenya will be without nine senior players including vice captain and top try scorer Collins Injera, Dan Sikuta, Oscar Ayodi, Billy Odhiambo, Dennis Ombachi, Patrice Agunda, Tony Owuor, Leonard Mugaisi and Lavin Asego who have various injuries.

Pool ‘B’ will see England Saxons play World Series core side Spain, Olympic hosts Brazil and Zambia while Australia are the only seeded side in Pool ‘D’ and face Portugal, Namibia and Newcastle Wailers.

The top two teams from each pool will advance to the Main Cup quarters with teams finishing third and fourth relegated to the bowl category.

Head coach Benjamin Ayimba said the current crop of players selected are ready for the challenge.

Ayimba asked fans to turn up in large numbers and support the Kenyan outfits.
