Safaricom apologizes over Kasarani littering

Safaricom offered an apology to world men Javelin champion Julius Yego and other affected athletes after they were unable to use the training track at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani due to excess littering following Sunday’s jazz festival.

Yego caused an online storm when he slammed authorities on Tuesday for allowing the training track to host the festival and debris left at the scene, rendering it unfit for use by athletes including himself preparing for the forthcoming season that culminates with the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Director of Consumer Business at the local integrated communications giants, Sylvia Mulinge promised that a cleanup will be done as soon as possible in an apology statement sent on Tuesday evening.

“We note Mr. Julius Yego’s concern, and thank him for bringing this to our attention,” she said.

“Safaricom had paid for use of the Kasarani grounds until Wednesday  evening to facilitate cleanup of the grounds and also to effect any necessary repairs.  Our crews have been on the ground since Sunday’s event ensuring this takes place with the utmost speed. We apologize for any inconvenience as we undertake these actions.”

“Beyond the cleanup exercise, we have additionally invested in installing new gates at the venue, revamping the ramp for the disabled and also repairing the stairs leading to the venue, as part of our commitment to continue our work in improving the venue,” Mulinge stated.

“It’s so shameful!!Imagine this is the warm up area Kasarani stadium deem okay for training! Beer, water and all sorts of plastics n broken glasses everywhere!!!@its killing the talents we pretend to support @@the ministry of sports n in charge the stadia are sleeping people how can you allow a big function to be staged inside a stadium worse in a tartan track a tent is raise on it!!!@shameonyou…!” Yego posted on Facebook with accompanying photos.

His post ignited furious responses from world beaters who took it as another example of lack of seriousness among sportsperson with the post being shared 81 times since it went up by the time of going to press.

“This is monotonous..it’s not a first time for things like this .it’s look like kasarani warming track it’s become now A function area for any occasion even wedding ceremonies and any function what I kwn it’s for only sports activities not ceremonies,” fellow Beijing champion and world 400m hurdles titleholder, Nicholas Bett commented.
