Scholes attacks Anthony Martial after Champions League draw

Scholes attacks Anthony Martial after Champions League draw

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has hit out at striker Anthony Martial after the club drew 0-0 against PSV Eindhoven in a Champions League clash on Wednesday.

Scholes accused Martial of posting a lackluster performance at the game saying he did not look bothered whenever he misses a chance.

Speaking on BT Sports, the former England international said he does not believe Manchester United has a lethal forward to win matches when it matter the most.

This is not the first time that Scholes has had a dig at United, having previously differed with the club manager Louis van Gaal over his philosophy terming his approach to matches as boring.

“We keep saying defensively they are sound and I think they are but forward play just wasn’t good enough tonight,” Scholes is quoted by ESPN as saying.

“If you look at teams across Europe, like Bayern Munich and Barcelona you will realise that there are players up front who can make the difference.”

The draw left United second in Group B with a tricky final game away to leaders Wolfsburg.

Former United striker Michael Owen also lashed out at the club saying the team does not have the quality needed to compete in the highest stage of football.

Louis Van Gaal has previously come out to reveal that he does not know the best position to play Martial saying his position is often dictated by the general composition of team.

In October, Van Gaal also blasted Martial after he handled the ball in the box gifting CSKA Moscow a goal during their champions league encounter. Martial went ahead to score an equaliser, though it was not enough to save him the lashing.

The 19-year-old kicked off his United career with flamboyance, after joining for £36 million from Monaco in Summer, scoring four goals in four matches before his season took a dip.

The French international missed last weekend’s match against Watford after sustaining an injury during the International friendly match between France and England early this month.
