Security concerns prompted CAF to cancel inspection – Petra

Confederation of African Football (CAF) is now concerned about Kenya’s security in the wake of the presidential elections nullification by the Supreme Court, with the clock ticking fast towards the January 2018 African Nations Championships (CHAN).

In an exclusive interview with Citizen Digital, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President Doris Petra on Monday said the development raised fresh concerns over Kenya’s preparations forcing the continental football governing body to send 2nd Vice President Constant Omari to Kenya to assess the situation.

Consequently, an inspection tour by CAF officials that was set for September 7 was cancelled.

The Supreme Court ordered fresh presidential elections in under two months, nullifying President Kenyatta’s win hence the anxiety.

“CAF 2nd Vice President is already in the country. He is with the FKF president meeting government officials over security matters because that is what they are concerned about, with the elections that are set to be repeated,” said Petra.

With renovations of five stadia in the country earmarked for the tournament having commenced, Petra is confident that the fresh elections will not affect the ongoing construction.

“I don’t think the Supreme Court verdict is going to affect our chances of hosting CHAN. We believe it will be peaceful and we are not in politics. All we need from the government is finances to build the infrastructure.

“I urge Kenyans to pray that all goes well to make CHAN a reality as well as CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup that we will also be hosting this year,” added Petra.

FKF Chief Executive Officer, Robert Muthomi is keeping faith CAF will be satisfied with the security situation in the country.

“Renovations are on course but the Supreme Court decision left CAF worried, but we expect the government will give the necessary assurance that everything will be alright and we shall host CHAN,” charged Muthomi.

Five stadia have been earmarked for the competition,  Nairobi’s Moi Sports Centre Kasarani and Nyayo, Eldoret’s Kipchoge Keino, Meru’s Kinoru and Kenyatta (Machakos).

Only Kasarani is ready for the tournament so far.
