Senegal’s Indomitable Lions recorded a roaring start to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tearing apart Tanzania’s Taifa Stars 2-0 at the 30 June Stadium here in Cairo.
Keita Balde who turns out for Inter Milan in the Italian Serie A gave the Lions a deserved lead in the 27th minute with a left-foot drive after beating the Tanzanian defence to ignite celebrations from the hundreds of travelling Senegalese fans before Keprin Diatta who plies his professional trade with Belgian outfit Club Bruge confirmed the win in teh 63rd minute.
Senegal were by far the superior team in this encounter and it showed from start to finish. Playing crisp football laced with short passes and neat build-up from midfield, the Lions coached by Aliou Cisse, one of Senegal’s 2002 World Cup heroes begun strongly with Mbaye Niang missing narrowly a gilt-edge chance, his shot veering off in the fifth minute after he had been teed by Ismaila Sarr.
The west Africans put Tanzania’s defence under so much pressure with Niang firing wide again, four minutes to the break.
The Taifa Stars led by their star-man and skipper Mwana Samatta were reduced to making sporadic attacks and in the few instances they created chances, the final product wasn’t troublesome enough for Senegalese goalie Edouard Mendy. The win took Senegal top of Group C on three points ahead of another group match pitting Kenya against Algeria.
