Shabana finally nick first NSL point in Mombasa

Fallen giants Shabana FC’s finally recorded a first point in their wretched start to the National Super League (NSL) campaign after holding Modern Coast Rangers to a 1-1 draw at Mombasa’s Mbaraki Stadium on Sunday.

The result stemmed a run of seven successive defeats for the basement side who took the lead through a brilliant 18 yard shot four minutes to the break and looked set to grab all three until David Orem equalised in the 78th.

The match was stopped for some minutes in the second half as a section of the home support stormed the pitch to protest against unfair officiating.

Shabana ended a torrid run of seven successive defeats with team manager, Andrew Kanuli saying their recent friendly against Kenyan Premier League side, Sony Sugar aided them prepare for the Rangers game.

“The boys have been together for six months now and there is integration within the team that worked for us today (Sunday),” Kanuli told Citizen Digital.

“The forwards have done well and we look forward to improvement. The transfer window is not yet closed and we shall reinforce the current squad,” he added.

“We are happy our team has taken a point from Mombasa. We however, understand the troubles of our club and expect more good result in future,” the chairman of the Shabana Gusii branch Boniface Ntabo said.

They honoured Sunday’s game after well wishers intervened and contributed Ksh100,000 to facilitate their expenses.

Troubled Gusii based Shabana FC earned a reprieve from Football Kenya Federation (FKF) last week after their game against Palos FC that failed to take off mid fortnight ago was rescheduled.

The former top flight giants awarded Oserian FC a walkover on June 5 and last Sunday, match official gave Police a 2-0 victory on the grounds Shabana were not ready for the match since the Awendo Green Stadium playing pitch was not marked.

The team that was re-admitted to the second tier via a decision of the Sports Disputes Tribunal and remains in danger of being thrown out of the NSL if they fail to honour a third game.

Shabana remains bottom placed with a point and -15 goal difference five points behind their closest rivals Ligi Ndogo while Modern Coast rangers remained 16th on 11.
