Sharks devour Rangers to book FKF-Shield quarters

Kariobangi Sharks sailed through to the quarter finals of the FKF-Shield after beating Modern Coast Rangers 3-1 away in Mombasa in a round of 16 match.

Sharks were joined in the quarters by Kenya Police who sneaked through with a 4-3 post-match penalty victory over Leysa after a 0-0 draw in regulation time.

Elsewhere, Friend Zone crashed out in the hands of Riverplate after losing 2-0.

At the Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa, Rangers took an early lead in the 15th minute through Francis Ochola’s strike and it looked like the National Super League were going to have a good afternoon.

Sharks reacted quickly, getting their equalizer in the 27th minute, James Mazembe hitting the target. Few minutes before the breather, Rangers scored an own goal to give Sharks the lead, before claiming the winner through Bolton Omwenga in the 56th minute to ensure that Rangers journey in the shield tournament came to an end.

Following the defeat, Rangers head coach Abdul Naseer Kassim slammed his players for what he termed as “poor coordination and communication”.

“We started the match very well and we got a well deserved lead but my players made silly mistakes in defence and we were punished. Sharks punished us from our own errors,”he fumed.

It was a fourth consecutive defeat for Rangers in all competitions and the tactician admitted he feels the pressure.

“Honestly, the pressure is there but we are going to bounce back soon. I urge our supporters to rally behind us and the results shall come,’added Naseer.
