Ten-man Sofapaka edged Posta Rangers 1-0 at the Camp Toyoyo grounds on Wednesday afternoon to give their quest for a top-three finish a major boost.

George Maelo scored the only goal of the afternoon to seal maximum points for Sofapaka but was later red carded after receiving a second booking for a malicious tackle after his header in the 72nd minute had put his side in the lead.

At the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Thika United’s relegation worries were deepened after falling 3-0 to Kariobangi Sharks.

George Abege, Duke Abuya and Eric Kapaito scored the goals to haul Sharks points tally to 43 while at the Ruaraka grounds, Justin Omari and Jackson Macharia were on the mark as Tusker thumped Chemelil Sugar 2-0 to also give their quest for a top- three finish a boost.

The win by Sofapaka stretched their points tally to 51 as Rangers remain on 12th on 34 points.

At Camp Toyoyo, the first half was evenly balanced, with much of the play in the middle of the pack with both sides creating chances on both ends.

Sofapaka had a couple of set pieces which they did not convert and Umar Kasumba’s celebrations were short-lived after he put the ball in the back of the net in the 29th minute only to be ruled out for an offside.

The mailmen also came close, almost breaking the deadlock with four minutes left before halftime. Last ditch defending from Batoto ba Mungu maintained the scores at 0-0 as Kennedy Otieno’s goal bound shot was cleared off the line just before an onrushing Danson Kago could pounce on the ball.

Sofapaka started the second half with much intent, controlling the game and but could not breach the Rangers defence .

Rodgers Aloro who was constantly involved in the attack profited his side a free kick, neatly taken by Kevin Kimani but it couldn’t find the target. Moments later his shot came off the post to give Rangers a reprieve.
