Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) vice-chairman Sammy Shollei questions around the forces backing Nicholas Musonye’s candidature should not derail his presidency bid.

Reports have suggested Musonye has Government support in the race for the federation’s top seat against incumbent Nick Mwendwa who has had a series of recent public spats with Sports Ministry authorities.

The former Kenyan international Shollei has thrown his weight behind Musonye, saying the former CECAFA boss has the maturity to lead the federation that has twice been stopped from conducting national polls over issues in its electoral board.

“We know very well that Musonye is a performer hence what I want is to see football standards improve in the country,” Shollei said.

Musonye’s bid, which he announced last month, has been consolidated with support from ex-FKF vice chairman Twaha Mbarak from Mombasa, Extreme Sports Chief executive officer Hussein Mohamed, ex-FKF western branch chairman Andrew Amukowa.

It has been reported there are ongoing negotiations with Gor Mahia FC’s Chief Executive Lordvick Aduda, who also has declared ambitions to lead FKF as they seek to build a team that can unseat Mwendwa.

Shollei has also suggested that the football federation top post should be changed to chairman or head instead of president.

“How much money does FKF has in it’s account? If you want to be called president you must hold what the title says. In fact if Musonye wins the FKF top seat lets just call him Musonye and not president,” the 53-year-old posed.

On Wednesday, FKF president Mwendwa accused the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) chairman John Ohaga of having ‘personal interest’ in the polls and claimed he was using unorthodox means to hand the advantage to his opponents.
