Shujaa ace Amonde has lofty Gold Coast targets

Kenya Rugby Sevens forward Andrew Amonde says their target in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Australia is to reach the finals and win the gold medal.

The KCB RFC flanker who will make his third Commonwealth appearance in Gold Coast was upbeat Kenya can go all the way despite having never made the podium at the Games.

At Glasgow 2014, Shujaa, then under head coach Benjamin Ayimba, managed only one win in five matches at the largest Scottish city en route to finishing seventh out of 13. It was the same finish they had achieved two years earlier in Brazil.

“We have prepared well enough for the upcoming Commonwealth Games since we have been together in training for a long time. We’re a work in progress but so far we have rectified on the mistakes that cost us,” Amonde told Citizen Digital after the Shujaa’s morning training session at the RFUEA Grounds.

Amonde added that the likes of skipper Oscar Ouma, vice captain Samuel Oliech, Mwamba RFC Winger Collins Injera,  Augustine Lugonzo and Billy Odhiambo who all played in Brazil, will be a plus to the team ahead of the global event.

“Experience will count for us because it will be a plus for the team and you know sometimes experience can help you win a particular tournament and to me the team has enough experience,” he said.

Kenya will begin their Gold Coast campaign against Canada at 3.15am on Saturday April 14 before facing World champions New Zealand at 7.17am and conclude their pool C against fellow Africans Zambia at 1.27pm.

The team is set to depart to Australia on Sunday April 1, 2018.
