Shujaa boss Simiyu calls for rugby resumption ahead of Olympics

Kenya Sevens head coach Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu has urged the government to allow sports resumption.

In a reflection with Citizen Digital, the former Shujaa skipper said most rugby players have sport as their full time job and are struggling to meet their daily needs in the absence of sports, adding that clubs are committed to following the Covid 19 guidelines as outlined by the government.

“There are a lot of players who’re not in the national team, so our prayer to the government is to find a solution so that the players can resume and earn a living out of the game,” said Simiyu.

“Currently most of the players earn their living through sports and many more at the rugby grassroots depend on rugby to earn their living,” he added.

Sports remain shut in the country following the government’s directive, issued last month as a way of curbing the spread of the flu-like virus.

Simiyu has at the same time hailed the government for the support accorded to the team during the recent tour of Spain and the Middle East where they participated in the Madrid and Dubai Invitational Series.

“I thank the government for supporting us especially facilitating our trips in Madrid and Dubai to play invitational rugby,” he observed.

Shujaa are expected to play in another invitational tournament in South Africa.
