Shujaa bounce back 17-7 against Japan in Dubai 7s

Kenya dusted off their opening 24-14 defeat to France to edge past Japan 17-7 and keep their hopes of reaching the Cup quarters at the Dubai Sevens.

Frank Wanyama broke the deadlock to thrust Kenya into a 5-0 lead after Augustine Lugonzo failed to convert but were soon trailing as Japan’s Lean Ellisson converted his own try to hand his side a 7-5 advantage heading to the break.

William Ambaka restored Shujaa’s lead, picking a pass from Lugonzo before storming downfield to score but Lugonzo failed to convert.

The Shujaa were relentless in pushing to extend their lead and were rewarded for their efforts as they got a penalty inside their opponent’s 22m. In his first cap, substitute Brian Tanga scratched the ball before nodding Dan Sikuta through on the outside to score from a tackle. Tanga converted for the 17-7 victory.

Kenya will now take on Australia in the last pool match at 5.22pm (+GMT) on Friday, a fixture they must win to secure a place in the Cup quarter-finals.
