Shujaa fired up for Sydney series

The Kenya Sevens national team Shujaa arrived safely in Sydney on Monday, Australia, ahead of their tough Sydney sevens series.

The Innocent Simiyu coached-team pitched camp at the Intercontinental Sydney Hotel and held a quick meeting at the Premier Room Intercontinental before heading for dinner at the same venue.

On Tuesday morning, the team underwent fitness check of before getting to pitch work at the Leichardt Oval grounds, to familiarize themselves with the playing field.

After the lunch break, kickers Brian Tanga, Sammy Oliech, Eden Agero and Augustine Lugonzo head for the kickers training at 16:30 to 18:00Hrs EAT (+3GMT).

The kickers will be seeking to rack up more points tally to add to the 13 they have garnered so far.

The rest of the team will be checking on their speed limits, strength and breakdowns reactions as part of day one training.

They will later break for dinner before undergoing a Physio test and a 45 minutes meeting with the head coach before lights off.

Shujaa are pooled alongside Series contenders Argentina, France and Wales in Pool B of the Sydney Sevens.

Shujaa will kick off their campaign against Cape Town cup finalist Argentina at 11:06Hrs EAT (+3GMT) on Friday before facing France on Saturday at 7:25Hrs. Their last pool assignment will be against Wales.

Buoyed by the return of his former captain Andrew Amonde, Simiyu is expected to name a strong starting lineup with of Willy Ambaka, Oscar “Big wheels” Ouma and Dan Sikuta in contention for the forwards position.

Tanga and Lugonzo are expected to fight for the scrumhalf position while Oliech and Agero will battle it out for the fly-half position.

Ouma will captain the squad and will be deputized by Oliech while debutants Eric Ombassa and Samuel Muregi will be hoping for a chance to showcase their worth.

Kenya remains 11th in the series standings after collecting 10 points in Dubai 7’s and three points in Cape Town 7’s
