Shujaa launch Hong Kong 7s tour with Canada stroll

The national sevens team Shujaa got their Hong Kong tour off to a positive start after claiming a 33-10 win over Canada in their Pool B opener on Friday.

Andrew Amonde punched through their Canadian defence to score a ferocious try with teammates Nelson Oyoo, Sammy Oliech, Collins Injera and Willy Ambaka also putting their names on the tries sheet with beautiful touchdowns.

Canada drew first blood following an 18-pass move that unlocked the Kenya defence line with Connor Braid capping the piece of play with an unconverted try at the far left corner.

Oliech would restore parity soon after kick off as charged through 40 metres to score at the far right corner but failed to add the extras.

Former captain Amonde went over for Kenya’s second try and his 47th of the global Series after the Canadians were caught napping with the flashing up 12-7 after the try was converted.

Shujaa pressed on at the restart but were soon penalised for a high tackle by Nelson Oyoo and through it Canada scored a quick taken penalty through Pat Kay.

That setback did not deter Shujaa as talisman Injera went over for his 251st series which Oliech converted.

Ambaka then took the game beyond Canada’s reach when he scored his 100th try climb to third among Kenya’s all-time leading tries chart.

Nelson Oyoo had been deeply involved in setting him up following a well-worked move with Eden Agero converting it.

Oyoo then turned from provider to try scorer after sending a few Canadian defenders tumbling over to score under the posts for Agero to convert with little trouble.

To qualify for the Cup quarters in the Hong Kong Shujaa must win at least one of their two remaining matches against Spain and Australia on Saturday morning.

Shujaa are ranked eighth in the standings with 64 points, six adrift of seventh placed England.

South Africa is on top with 109 points, Fiji second with 101, New Zealand third with 92 and Australia fourth with 84.
