Shujaa shifts focus to Vancouver Sevens after Spain heartache

Kenya rugby sevens team Shujaa missed out on the chance to make it to the Challenge Trophy finals of the fifth round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series after going down 24-7 to Spain in a semi-final clash at the Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas last night.

Shujaa was unable to find their accuracy in the early moments of the match, with Spain’s Rodriguez Guerro the quickest off the blocks putting his side to the lead while Javier Carrion added the extras for a 7-0 cushion.

Paul Murunga exhibited nerves early on in the game with a couple of mistakes that hindered their forward play.

Carrrion inflicted more damage to Shujaa giving Spain an unconverted try to haul their advantage to 12-0, before Bush Mwale showed the opponents a clean pair of heels to put Kenyan back into the game as Daniel Taabu was spot-on with his conversion as  Kenya clawed back to 12-7

Carrion, a live-wire in the game scored his second of the day, after collecting the ball in the 22-metre line before Hernandez converted.

Spain were excellent at keeping possession in the second half and used their chances to earn more points. Pablo Fontes who was instrumental in setting up their earlier tries got a set-piece move deservedly getting one of his own to make it 24-7 at full time.

Shujaa earned five points in the Las Vegas Series but remain at position 13 with 17 points in the 18-team log.

The Paul Murunga coached charges now shift focus to Vancouver Sevens where they are set to face Samoa, Fiji and C and in Pool B this weekend in Canada.
