Shujaa to kickstart season with invitational tourney in Spain

Kenya rugby sevens team will kick off their season next month with an invitational tourney in Madrid, Spain.

This is according to head coach Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu who believes that rugby will resume this month amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

“According to Kenya Rugby Union, rugby will resume this month but international tournament will start next month with an invitational tournament in Spain,” said Simiyu.

“From there the next tournament will be in Dubai come April, then London and the Olympics with the series starting after the Olympics,” he noted.

Simiyu was however quick to add  that the dates of the tournaments have not been firmed up yet and a lot could in change in view of the pandemic.

Local rugby was suspended in March last year following the outbreak of Covid-19 when the government banned all sports activities.

Since then there has been a phased return with topflight football matches already being played.

Shujaa are already in training after undergoing Covid-19 screening before the turn of the calendar and Simiyu maintains they’re focusing on physical conditioning and skills as they abide by the government directives in the wake of the pandemic.

“The most important thing is the health and safety of the players so we’re really focusing on the precautions during training following the guidelines given by the government,” added the tactician.

“We’re focusing on the physical conditioning of the players and skill work and we’re very unfortunate that we cannot do any contact as much as the government has given the go ahead,” he added.

Shujaa were last in action in March 2020 during the HSBC World Rugby Series in Los Angeles.
