Shujaa trio to feature in Singapore Sevens despite injury concerns

Shujaa trio of winger Collins Injera, fullback Samuel Oliech and centre Willy Ambaka are expected to play in the eighth round of HSBC World Rugby Sevens amid injury concerns.

Kenya’s top try scorer Collins Injera suffered an injury in the right arm triceps at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia while Impala Saracens Samuel Oliech got a concussion in the same duty.The burly Willy Ambaka was also snot spared picking a knock.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kenya Rugby Union chairman Richard Omwela downplayed the level of their injuries maintaining that a week is enough for the trio to recover since they only got a knock.

 “It is the work of the technical bench to know who plays and who doesn’t but I expect the trio to play against England on Saturday morning, because to me a week is enough to recover from a knock having in mind that they still have four days ahead of their pool opener match.”

Kenya will play their pool ‘B’ opener match against England at 7.52 am (EAT) on Saturday, before playing their second pool match against France at 11.18 am, before concluding their pool match against Las Vegas champions USA at 2.44 pm.

The trio has been sensational this season especially in the last two rounds of the series where Kenya finished runners up in the Vancouver and Hong Kong Sevens.

Samuel Oliech is 10th on the log of players with most conversions after hitting 40.

He has also accumulated 130 points afters even rounds, , putting him at position  14th on the log of players with most points.

Willy Ambaka who trades for Manawatu in New Zealand is 13th in the log with 20 tries so far this season.

At the same time,  Omwela confirmed that Arthur Owira is still in Australia after going for his second assessment with specialists at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Owira’ return will thus be determined by the medical advise of the specialists.
