Simiyu expects Injera to be available for South Africa tourney

Kenya Sevens head coach Innocent Simiyu expects Collins Injera to be available for the next invitational tournament in South Africa after missing the previous two in Spain and Dubai.

The coach said Injera has been having some challenges to sort out but Simiyu is confident the all-time try scorer will overcome and be ready for South Africa when the team resumes camp on Sunday.

“Sammy Oliech has a long term injury so he will be out for a while it was an Achilles injury and he is undergoing rehabilitation; hopefully he will join the team next year. Collins(Injera) had some challenges so we hope he will be able to participate in the next tournament; the ball is in his court to work hard and life the standards,” said Simiyu.

Speaking during the vaccination process at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Tuesday, Simiyu talked about the team performance in the two tournaments saying they are heading in the ‘right direction’ ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games.

“I will rate the team at eight out of 10. In regards to the standards we are not far off but we are hoping we can get some few more camps in Nairobi and a few more tournaments and we can be able to be at a safe place in terms of our plans and target,” added Simiyu.

Shujaa finished third in both tournaments and Simiyu is hoping for a better outing in South Africa.

MeanwhilE Kenya Rugby Union chairman Gangla Oduor says plans are underway to prepare for this year’s Barthes Cup. Speaking at the same event, Gangla said the Union is coordinating with officials from the ministry of sports to make sure this year’s event takes place.

“We have started the work of planning for the tournament in coordination with the ministry of sports and that is very much on track; at least we are confident that rugby activities are going to resume,” affirmed Gangla.

At the same time the KRU boss said plans are underway to make sure all the teams that participate in the Kenya Cup receive the vaccination in anticipation of the league resumption.

“On Wednesday, with the support of the government we start the vaccination for the players who play in the top league and that will put us in the path to resume the league one that the government clears us,” Gangla told Citizen Digital.

Like other sports, rugby hasn’t been played since last month when the government announced the ban on sports, amongst other measures aimed at taming the spread of the virus.
