Six-times lucky? Lewa king Mbaaru reigns supreme

Philemon Mbaaru stake his claim as the undisputed Safaricom Lewa Marathon king as he raced to his sixth title of the annual competition on Saturday.
Mbaaru prevailed under the punishing Lewa Wildlife Conservancy conditions, charging through to win in 2.22:21 as Peter Wahome clocked home in 2.22:33 for second place. Cyrus Muturi (2.23:23) was third.
“I was using the event to prepare for an international race in October, I started well leading in the first 20km but in the second half the competition was tough I nearly lost it.
“People are saying that I have mastered the course but this is Training I always try to train hard so as to have an easy race,” Mbaaru said.
Jane Ngima took the women’s title in only her first attempt, timing 2.51:31 as last year’s winner, Esther Macharia settled for second place in 2.53:41. Mary Mwaniki came a distance third with a time of 3.29:31.
“This is my first time to be here the course is tough. In my mind I never knew I was going to win until when I reached the 38K mark where I realized my opponent wasn’t getting any stronger so I took off,” Ngima said.
Maurice Munene (1.05:39) and Mary Ngendo Mwaura (1.15:14) won the 21km race. Kiprono Kipkemboi (1.06:07) finish second ahead of Cyrus Kimutai (1.06:23) Peris Legapana (1.16:34) and Esther Wangui Waweru (1.20:01) finish second and Third respectively in the women’s race.
