Soya nomination a challenge to work even harder: Alumira

Vihiga Queens head coach Alex Alumira has said that their nomination for the Women Team of the Year award at this year’s Soya ceremony is a challenge to do even greater in the upcoming season.

Queens were in good form last season winning the Women Premier League title for the third straight time and for keeps, and their heroics have not gone unnoticed as they have been shortlisted for the award, and will fight it out alongside Kenya’s women volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, Harambee Starlets, KPA women basketball team and the rugby national side, Kenya Lionesses.

They become the first team in the women league to get such an honour.

And ahead of the gala night set for January 24 at the Mombasa Sports Club, the soft-spoken tactician is hopeful his charges will carry the day, attributing their stellar season to unity and support from both the administration and the technical bench.

At the same time, Alumira who has also been nominated to contest for the Coach of the Year award has rallied the team’s fans to vote for them.

Meanwhile the coach predicts a tough season ahead even as the rebuilding of the squad takes shape in this January transfer window, noting that he’s set to release four players.

“We will be releasing players who failed to impress, and who want to try something fresh elsewhere to create chance for upcoming players,” he said.

However the club is planning to hire four more players;–young and energetic– who were identified during school games and local tournaments in a bid to improve the squad.
