Sparkling KCB thump Congolese outfit as Championship serves off in Egypt

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) volleyball team announced their return to the women’s African Club Championship in style thrashing DGSP of Congo in straight sets as the annual competition served off on Saturday at Alhly Club Hall in Cairo, Egypt

The high flying  bankers downed their opponents  25-14, 25-12 and 25-17 in a Pool ‘B’ opener to underline their quest of bagging their second continental title. Their maiden title was won 13-years ago.

The bankers will face tricky Sporting of Egypt on Tuesday in their second pool match before finishing their preliminary matches against 2017 champions Carthage of Tunisia on Wednesday.

In a post match reflection, KCB head coach Japheth Munala hailed his charges for the win but warned  against sleeping complacency.

“We have started very well and that’s what we were expecting because we had prepared well but now the challenge lies in Sporting and Carthage because if we win one of the two matches we will be through to the semis, ” Munala told Citizen Digital from Egypt.

In the other day one fixture, Customs of Nigeria ran riot against USFA of Burundi defeating the latter with straight sets in a Pool ‘A’ opener.

On Sunday, Kenya Volleyball Federation champions Kenya Prisons will launch their hunt for a sixth title against Asec from Ivory Coast from 4pm Kenyan time in a Pool ‘D’  match. The group also has Nkumba University of Uganda, 2014 winners GSP Algiers of Algeria and 2014 silver medallists Elshams of Egypt.

Last year’s bronze medallists Kenya Pipeline who have won the coveted title six times, will be up against fast-rising Revenue of Rwanda on Sunday from 5pm before facing Shooting of Egypt before wrapping up the group campaign against Cameroonians FAP in their final Pool ‘C’ match.

Defending champions and hosts Al Ahly will start their title defence against Canon of Congo from 10pm before facing Customs of Nigeria and USFA of Burkina Faso.
