Sports tribunal grants orders halting Thika-Ushuru playoff

The conundrum that has blighted our game is unfolding yet again after Thika United got interim orders from the Sports Disputes Tribunal stopping Football Kenya Federation from proceeding with the play-off plan.

The play-offs which would have seen Thika and Ushuru lock horns in two leg face-off for a slot in the KPL were initially scheduled for this week, but was postponed to December 10 and 12 by the federation , but the aggrieved Thika, who have been against the idea rushed to the tribunal on Tuesday evening to challenge the merit of the directive.

The case will be heard on Monday December 11 at 2.30pm.

In their petition, Thika is seeking a directive on the matter. The team under coach Nicholas Muyoti have been unhappy with the FKF directive after finishing at position 16 in the 2017 Kenyan Premier League, while Ushuru, who finished third in the NSL, have been inching for the opportunity.

“We thought everything was over after that 1-0 win over Bandari on November 18, but we will defend our place in the Premier League again if we must,”Muyoti told Citizen Digital this week, adding :“We don’t have a problem playing as long as all stakeholders in the matter are in unison. The trouble in this scenario is how the said rule is being forced through by one side.

“Ignoring stakeholders in such sensitive matter only amounts to crisis,” lamented Muyoti.

However, Ushuru coach, Ken Kenyatta, has been vocal in supporting the play-off directive. He said: “Let Thika be honest, this rule was passed before the start of the season. We are ready for them and my players are charged than I am for a return to the top-flight.

“I discussed with them (players) after Saturday’s loss to Vihiga United, and they know it is not over until we face Thika,” he charged.
