St. Anthonys confident of hockey title defense after clean start

St. Anthony’s Kitale High School kicked off their boys hockey title defence with a 3-0 win against Coast’s St. Georges High on Tuesday, as the National Secondary Schools term one games got underway at the Shanzu Teachers College, Mombasa.

Two goals from Lorgan Mabuka and Captain Oscar Kiptoo were enough for the East African defending Champions, to silence the hosts despite the huge backing they enjoyed from the locals.

Speaking to Citizen Digital Kitale’s Coach Kevin Lugalia warned there is no playing second fiddle to any opponent, chargingcomparedning win confirms their agenda for the championship.

“This is a clear indication of what what we want here – title defense and a warning to other teams we will be facing that we mean business. We are here for the title,” charged Lugalia.

In other hockey games Homaby High from Nyanza sunk Nairobi School 1-0, as Meru overcame Mpesa Foundation with a similar score. St. Charles Lwanga of Coast were defeated by Friends School Kamusinga of Western by the same margin.

In the girls category St. Johns Kaloleni came from a goal down to force a one all draw against Nyanza’s Nyamira, St. Joseph Kibwezi defeated St. Marys Taachasis 1-0 while St. Cecilia thrashed Hillcrest School by three unanswered goals.

Level of competition

In Handball, Moi Girls Kamusinga also started impressively, downing Voi White House 19-7 in their first day match.

Kamusinga’s coach Godfrey Simiyu hailed the level of competition, noting their opponents in this year’s championship are tougher to tackle.

“From the first match, we can tell standards have gone a notch higher compared to the other years but my girls are after the eighth title. That is firm in our plans and we are going for it,” offered the coach.

Elsewhere Kirandich from Riftvalley whitewashed North Eastern’s Volunteer School 57-01 while Kirigara beat Dagoretti 27-18, before Nyanza’s Sega whipped Kahuho 36-04.
