St. Johns Girls, St. Charles Lwanga scoop hockey titles

St. Charles Lwanga and St. John’s Girls High School celebrated their fourth and third successive Kenya Schools Sports Association Coast Region boys and girls hockey titles on Friday at Kenyatta High School grounds in Mwatate.

Lwanga had to battle from a goal down to floor Kenyatta 2 – 1 in their own ground to retain the cup for the fourth consecutive year.

Augustine Luchacha had put Kenyatta ahead in the first minute only for St. Charles to equalise through Ian Matari in the 20th with Ian emerging the hero after scoring the winner in the 69th.

Patricia Tunje was the heroine by sounding the board with the winner as St. John’s held on to their crown by beating Matuga Girls 1 – 0.

On Saturday, the rugby 15s title will go back to Kilifi, Kaloleni or remain in Taita Taveta County when Kenyatta High face St. Georges in the final at the Danson Mwanyumba Stadium in Wundanyi.

In semis Kenyatta squeezed past local rivals, Mghalu 16 – 14 as St. Georges had to sweat for a narrow 16 – 15 win over Galana.

New basketball queens Kaya Tiwi from Kwale white washed St. John’s 141 – 7 in the semi’s to book their first final appearance against Murray in a clash that starts at 8am.

In the other semi final Murray brushed off Mwakitawa 52 – 37.

The boys final will be between the defending champs St. Georges and Aga Khan Academy from Mombasa.

The match will kick off at 10am at the Kenyatta Mwatate grounds.

The national championships will held at Friend’s School Kamusinga in Nzoia County from April 11 to 16.
