St. Peters, Kakamega clinch FEASSA rugby titles

St. Peter’s Mumias are the new rugby sevens champions of the East Africa Secondary 2016 edition, after their 21-14 victory over Uganda’s Kololo Secondary in Thursday’s finals at the Eldoret Sports Club.

St. Peter’s ran in three converted tries against Kololo’s two to claim the regional title as Upper Hill School finished third after seeing off national champions, Laiser Hill Academy 19-7. Jinja Secondary claimed the games’ Bowl as St. Mary’s Kisubi took home the Shield.

On their way to the final, St. Peter’s saw off Upper Hill School 7-0 in the semis while Kololo edged Laiser Hill 17-14 in extra time.

Kololo took the lead through Mohammed Aruna’s try that Atto Jerome converted, before Sedden Marwa responding for with a try whose conversion was accurately booted by Dan Sabato.

Jerome then touched down and converted his own try to restore the Ugandan boys’ lead.

The Kenyans then levelled through Anami Bethwel who made the try with Sabatu making no mistake in the conversion. Skipper Tom Alfred scored the winning try as Sabatu once again perfectly hit home the final conversion of the match.

In the 15s version, Kakamega High clinched the championship with a match in hand after registering four successive wins.

Had either second placed Bungoma High or Uganda’s Hanna Mixed won in their fourth fixture, the championship battle would have gone down to the wire but the two drew 3-3 hence cannot surpass Kakamega’s 16 points. The former two have 11 each.
