Stage set for inaugural Baseball National League

The inaugural Baseball National League is set to kick off this weekend at the Kangaru Boys High School in Embu County with a total of 10 teams confirming their participation thus far.

This will be the first time the national baseball league is being played in Kenya with the registration still open for both the junior team (under-15s) and seniors for both men and women.

Meru Angels Baseball club that hails from Meru County is the first Kenyan team to play in an international competition where they participated in the 2018 East Africa Clubs tournament held in Lugazi, Uganda.

According to the Organizing Secretary of the Kenya Little League, which is in charge of Baseball in Kenya George Kinyanjui, the success of Meru Angels should inspire more youths to engage in Baseball.

Furthermore, Kinyanjui has urged sponsors to come on board and support the sport arguing that if Meru Angels and other teams get enough support then they are headed for a bright future.

“If Meru Angels had proper support from both the county and national government they would have done even much better in the regional competition. Thus, I am urging both county and national governments and the corporates to boost this sport,” said Kinyanjui.

With the second edition of East Africa Clubs Championships set to be held in Kenya in December, thus the necessity of having a competitive league in the country.

National Youth Service (NYS) team has also shown interest in joining the national league after receiving equipment from the federation.

Aside from the national league, the baseball mini-league will be played on February 2-4 at Meru University grounds with teams from Japan and America set to grace the three-day event.
