Stage set for Road to Anfield

As opposed to last year, Tanzania will not participate in the 2018 Road to Anfield football competition. According to organizers, the Standard Chartered Bank of Kenya, the competition format has shifted from regional competitions to local thus allowing only Kenyan teams will participate.

“Last year we had a regional tournament where the winner from Kenya played the winner from Tanzania. The Tanzania team qualified to Anfield so this year we have decided to go back to the old format where the winner from Kenya is the one to represent Kenya in Liverpool,” Lamin told Citizen Digital.

The tournament is set to kick off on March 14 at St Mary’s School in Nairobi, with 36 teams taking part. The winner will represent Kenya in Liverpool on May 17.

Last year, Azania FC from Tanzania emerged as champions, earning the ticket to Anfield but Standard Chartered Bank CEO Lamin Manjang says the aim is to ensure that a Kenyan team qualifies for the trip this year.

The 36 teams that will take part in the competition will be built from Standard Chartered clients and the media partners who will battle for the sole slot to represent Kenya in Liverpool.

Meanwhile, registration of the teams interested in the competition is open until March 6.

Manjang, at the same time, challenged the team that will represent Kenya in Liverpool to better the 2016 performance when Capital FC won the international prize after beating all before them, culminating in a 3-2 victory over South Korea in the finale to bag the crown.

The team that bags the ticket to Anfield will not only take part in the Standard Chartered Trophy finals but will also attend an English Premier League live match, besides benefitting from a coaching clinic administered by some of the Liverpool legends.

The Road to Anfield was launched in 2013 as a way of celebrating the Bank’s sponsorship to Liverpool FC and give a once in a life- time experience to their clients and media partners.
